I got my dream camera this weekend, a Mamiya 6 medium format rangefinder.

It is literally the most incredible camera i have ever used. Im very much looking forward to producing LOTS of work with it. Its so quick and easy to use and the quality of the lens and the camera itself are the best I’ve ever come across. Better than any Rolleiflex, Leica, Hasselblad, Nikon or Canon camera i can think of.

I ran two test rolls through it at the tattooist below my studio on saturday and spent the day developing the film and prints. Its boosted my thirst for photography! Much more coming very soon!

Firstly, sorry about the lack of posts recently. Its been a crazy few months and most of my time has been spent building, painting and plumbing to get The Photo Parlour up and running for our opening on the 12th of April.

The opening party was great! The place was packed and all the free booze got drank and we had a dance in the studio at midnight. I cant ask for more than that! A big thank you to everyone that came down and all the artists that exhibited in the gallery space, it wouldn’t have happened without you.

We’ve got our Logo sorted which has been lovingly designed by the mighty Chris Marsh (AKA Arthur Foxcakes). I think it perfectly illustrates the hands on ethos behind The Photo Parlour.

I have been featured in a few regional publications recently including The Derby Evening Telegraph and Artsbeat magazine which is amazing. I have also been featured on the Bees Make Honey Co-op site which is an excellent resource for new creative businesses.

Its great that people are interested in the traditional darkroom and believe that there is still room for analogue in an increasingly digital world. I’ve received nothing but positive and encouraging comments from everyone that has seen the darkroom,studio and gallery, which is very encouraging.

I also became an Ilford Artisan! This means I am an Ilford authorised tutor and retailer and that all my workshops will be advertised on the Ilford site. I must admit its a little overwhelming to be included in a list of tutors including the likes of Dave Butcher, Andrew Sanderson, Steven Taylor and Jonathan Stead. I feel very privileged to be included in that list of photographers and darkroom practitioners.

All in all its been a pretty incredible month! We are currently putting the finishing touches to The Photo Parlour and finalising our workshop schedule which should begin in May. We are also getting the website (www.photo-parlour.com) up and running soon containing all the information on our services and facilities, along with our workshop schedule and prices.

As some of you may know over the past few months i have been building a community darkroom , studio and shop in Derby called The Photo Parlour. My wonderful partner Lara Elizabeth Elliott has been following me around with a DSLR over the last year filming me shooting film, developing, printing, talking crap, teaching and building the space. She intends to make a film documenting The Photo Parlour from its conception through to its completion as a community based environment for Photographers to hire and a space to carry out workshops in various photographic techniques.
Please feel free to re-blog and spread the word and keep an eye out for blog posts on the finished documentary in the future.

The Alchemist's Workshop: The Alchemist's Workshop is a big move. : Photographer Steven Taylor is setting up The Alchemists Workshop, a traditional photographic darkroom and gallery. A man after my own heart. Its great that both myself and Steven are setting up darkrooms for hire at the same time. Here’s to the start of another generation of film photographers and darkroom practitioners!

The Cameraless Photography Workshop will guide you through making photographic images using alternative techniques such as;

Photogrames - Creating experimental images using photosensitive paper, found objects and light in the darkroom with a photographic enlarger and other light sources.

Chemigrams - Creating experimental images using photosensitive paper and darkroom chemicals.

Images from made negatives - Making negatives using old film or acetate along with found objects. A darkroom enlarger is then used to create a final image.

You will be able to try as many of these techniques as you wish during the session and will leave with your own hand made, experimental photographic images.

The Pinhole Photography Workshop will teach you everything you need to know about making and using your own DIY pinhole camera.

In the Workshop you will construct a camera from a container of your choice, matchbox to shoebox size (containers will also be provided if you cannot provide your own).

You will then calculate the correct exposure through testing your camera and eventually make a final negative image. This image will then be reversed into positive using darkroom techniques.

All participants will leave with their own pinhole camera and a positive pinhole image made during the day.

THE PHOTO PARLOUR

For those who don’t know (and thats probably most of you) for the past few months i have been planning and building a traditional darkroom and studio based where i live in Derby, UK. I will be providing facilities for people to develop their own film and print their own images and well as take part in workshops i will be running for anyone, from beginners to experienced traditional photographers.

The studio will be community based and i will try and offer services at a price that is fair and affordable to all. I will also be having regular exhibitions of work produced in the darkroom as well as work produced by local artists. I want to create an environment where people feel comfortable so that they can enjoy learning new skills and hone their craft.

The Grand opening of the studio will be on Friday 12th April, however, i will be running workshops for FORMAT festival in the space next month. FORMAT is on of the biggest independent photography festivals in the U.K and i’m very excited to be part of it.

Two of my very good friends, Nav and Renata, got married a while back. Just before Christmas they moved to Dubai and they have been sorely missed ever since they left. I found a lost book of negatives recently. I had pretty much written them off and thought id never find them. However, whilst having a monster cleaning session i found them under the sofa! Obviously?! Safest place for them!

I’ve been looking through some old negatives recently and found some images i took in Brno, Czech Republic whilst on tour. I’d forgotten how interesting the building was that we stayed in. The place was in a pretty bad way but the people that lived there had made it nice and homely. Mostly students and elderly people lived there. The building in the courtyard used to be a bakery for the surrounding apartments. Apparently the proprietor turned to drink some time ago and the place has been left empty ever since.

I took the images on my Mamiya c220. I distinctly remember having trouble with my viewfinder fogging up, the temperature was -20 degrees C! I will never complain that i am cold ever again.

Ok, let me get this straight. I would NEVER usually post anything on this blog that wasn’t my own work. However, in this case, i will make an exception.

The film Instrument by Jem Cohen and Fugazi changed my life. It is a Documentary made on Super 8, 16mm, VHS and HI8 about the Washington punk band Fugazi, over a ten year period.

It not only changed my life in the sense that it made me want to make music independently but it made me want to have a “D.I.Y Punk” ethos behind my photographic work too. Im not necessarily talking about image content here, im talking about my reasons for shooting film.

I want people to know that film photography isnt only done by retirees who have the money and the equipment. Or by middle class kids who can afford over priced Lomography cameras and processing costs. Or students with access to the equipment and the chemistry.

It can be accessed by all and its easy to do. Its not actually that expensive! You can pick up a professional medium format film camera for next to nothing nowadays. The film is cheap. The chemicals are cheap and last ages. You can set yourself up with a film setup for the fraction of the cost of a digital SLR and achieve amazing results. There are darkrooms within a half hour drive that can be used to make prints and if not, get a cheap enlarger and turn your bathroom into a pop up darkroom! The prints that you learn to make with far surpass inkjet prints that are available at your local Jessops.

I guess i just want people to believe in what they love. If you love making music then make music that isnt compromised by anything else! If you like dancing, dance your arse off! If you like writing, do it as much as you can! and if you like being inspired to do something for yourself regardless of what anyone else thinks, WATCH THIS FILM!
